MySQL separates the SQL layer from a pluggable storage engine, and in practice that engine is InnoDB: clustered indexes, MVCC, foreign keys, and crash recovery. Knowing why InnoDB displaced MyISAM, and what MyISAM still cannot do, is a classic screening question.
