Searching with / and ? plus n/N and the word-under-cursor shortcuts, then editing at scale with :substitute and its g, c, i and e flags, address ranges, :global and :vglobal, and very-magic regex mode. Interviewers ask because a well-aimed :%s or :g is the fastest safe way to make a repetitive project-wide edit.
